A survey is being conducted in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh to assess the severity of water scarcity. According to the State Endowments Minister P. Manikyala Rao, who toured the region, mango and sweet lime plantations are withering away owing to steep fall in groundwater levels. He said, two teams are touring Tirupati and Chittoor, Anantapur, Kurnool and Kadapa districts to assess the severity of drought and they would send a report to the Centre.
In view of the water woes in Rayalaseema districts the State government is keen on diverting surplus Krishna water to the region. One and half tmc-ft of water was released last month to save sweet lime crop. There is a need for speedy completion of Galeru Nagari and Handri Neeva projects to save the crop and find a solution to drinking water scarcity.Delegations led by TDP and BJP leaders combine visited all the four districts in Rayalaseema-Kadapa, Chittoor, Anantapur and Kurnool and discussed strategies to mitigate the region’s perennial woes.
