No proposal to limit personal vehicles

The Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu today said in Rajya Sabha that there is no proposal to impose any limit on number of personal vehicles owned by a household and instead, the emphasis of the government is on providing an efficient public transport in urban areas. He informed Shri Ritabrata Banerjee that the central government has been making endeavors to promote quick, comfortable, reliable, safe, affordable and quality public transport as envisaged in the National Urban Transport Policy, 2006 instead of regulating the number of personal vehicles.

Shri Venkaiah Naidu has separately informed Shri Mansuklal Mandaviya that the Ministry of Urban Development has offered 80% financial assistance to the States and Union Territories to carry out studies on ‘congestion charges’. He said that States and UTs were advised last year to consider introduction of ‘congestion charges’ as a measure to ‘decongest’ identified areas. States/UTs were asked to identify the most congested areas in cities and undertake studies on various aspects of congestion charges as per city requirement to address the problem of congestion. But no formal proposal has been received from States/UTs.
