Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) chairman BC Tripathi met the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu, at his camp office and told him that the company would construct LNG terminal at Kakinada. Naidu told him that the state government would partner it in the project.The unit being set up by AP Gas Distribution, GAIL, Shell and GDF Suez will facilitate the supply of imported gas to the industry in the region of Andhra Pradesh. The terminal will start with a capacity of up to 5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and is designed for easy expandability to 10 mtpa to meet the surging demand for gas in the region.
The Chief Minister urged the GAIL chief to lay gas grid pipelines from Srikakulam to Kakinada, Kakinada to Nellore and Tumkur to Nellore through Hindupur. In view of the recent gas leak incident in East Godavari district, GAIL should take up measures to avoid recurrence of the same.
GAIL CMD agreed and said they were paying Rs 2.5 lakh to the kin of each victim, and Rs 6,000 for every coconut tree damaged in the Nagaram mishap. Sudha Murthy, the wife of Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy, also met the Chief Minister in the early hours of the day and enquired about the prospects of the IT industry in the residual State.
