NHRC notice to Tripura on rising crime against women

The National Human Rights Commission has taken cognizance of a complaint that incidents of crime against women, including rape, murder, molestation, torture for dowry, sexual harassment at workplace were on a rise in the State of Tripura. Allegedly, in almost all cases of sexual offence against women at workplace, the Government was trying to hush-up the matter to give protection to the offenders.Giving several instances of crime against women, wherein either delayed action or no action was taken by the police, during the current year, the complainant requested the Commission to take steps for the protection of right to life with dignity of women and to stop unabated violence against them in Tripura.

Mr. Justice D. Murugesan, Member of the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Government of Tripura calling for reports within four weeks.The complainant had also alleged that Tripura had become a safe heaven for women trafficking and even at workplace, women could not work with dignity. The guidelines of the Supreme Court laid down in Visakha case had not been implemented in Tripura.
