Government has decided to launch Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana to provide access to electricity to rural households across the country. A decision in this regard was taken at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi last evening.
The scheme will cost Rs 43 thousand crore rupees. Talking to reporters after the meeting, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the ongoing Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutikaran Yojana will also be merged in this scheme. The Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana will improve hours of power supply in rural areas and reduce in peak load.
Cabinet also approved a North Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project for six north eastern states for strengthening of the Intra-State Transmission and Distribution System. These states are Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tnpura and Nagaland . The estimated cost of the project is over 5111 crore rupees. The project is a major step towards meeting the national objective of Power to All. It will also increase the per capita power consumption in these States.
The Cabinet also gave its nod for launching the Integrated Power Development Scheme to strengthen the sub-transmission and distribution network in the urban areas. The scheme will help establishment of IT enabled energy accounting and auditing system besides improvement in billed energy based on metered consumption and improvement in collection efficiency.
