EC issued notices to 20 political parties on poll expences

The Election Commission has issued showcause notices to 20 political parties, including the BJP and Congress, over failure to file poll expense statements on time. In its communication to the parties, the Commission also warned them of de-recognition, if they fail to comply with its instructions within 15 days. Other parties to whom notices were issued include Samajwadi Party, Aam Aadmi Party, Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Kerala Congress (M), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Asom Gana Parishad and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party.

As per Supreme Court directions, it is mandatory for all political parties to file their election expenditure statement within 75 days of Assembly Elections and 90 days of Lok Sabha Elections. Prior to this, the poll body had written to these parties on the 22nd of last month to file their poll expenditure.
